When you’re evaluating energy usage in your home, there are probably a number of different factors that come in to play. Is your home comfort equipment working at its top efficiency? Do you have proper insulation? Is conditioned air leaking out your windows and doors, or is unconditioned air drafting in?
When you call Standard Insulating Co. for a home energy assessment, we’ll look at much more than your insulation. Our approach to home insulation is to understand the energy usage of your whole home before we even consider applying insulation. Our highly-trained, BPI certified technicians will conduct a thorough, free home energy audit that shows how much heat loss your home is experiencing, the areas of your home losing the most heat, and any possible safety issues. We use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to analyze your home for potential savings, and after we complete the work in your home, we’ll follow up with testing that shows how upgrading your insulation has improved your home’s efficiency.
We’ll take a look at your windows and doors. Are your windows older, single pane styles? If so, you might want to consider replacement windows or adding storm windows. Just by adding storm windows alone, you might be able to reduce your home’s energy loss by 25 to 50 percent! If you go for replacement windows, make sure they’ve been ENERGY STAR approved for these Northern climes. New exterior doors might be in order as well. Modern doors, unlike their older counterparts, are generally better fitting and are better insulated. Insulated, fiberglass doors are durable, low maintenance and most have five times the insulating value of a wood door. If your existing door is older but still in good condition, the addition of a storm door can help you save on energy loss as well.
We’ll also look at your home’s HVAC system and take into account its efficiency as well. Systems older than 10 years are likely lacking in efficiency. Today’s systems can provide up to 98 percent efficiency, so if you’ve been considering replacing your HVAC system with something that provides better comfort and efficiency, there’s really no better time than the present.
And of course, we’ll thoroughly evaluate your insulation needs. For example, new construction or remodeled areas that have been stripped down to the beams can benefit from spray foam; whereas, closed areas like the walls and attics of older homes can benefit from cellulose. We’ll see how your current insulation is working for you, and make recommendations for improvements.
