Home Energy Efficiency Basics

There are some basic things that you can do to make your home more energy efficient.   First, take a look at the building envelope.   This mainly consists of the attic, walls, doors and windows.   Then look at how efficient the systems are working in your house.   The systems include heating, cooling, lighting, appliances, etc.

Some ways that you can make your home more energy efficient are:

  • Ensuring the walls and attic have the proper and sufficient amount of insulation
  • Replace windows if needed
  • Plant trees and/or bushes around the home
  • Replace your current furnace and/or hot water system with an energy efficient system
  • Use Compact Fluorescent Lamps in place of Incandescent Bulbs
  • Don’t use a back up fridge
  • Take advantage of tax incentives to improve your home’s efficiency
  • Have a Energy Audit and/or Home Assessment completed by an Expert to determine your home’s need for improvements to become more Energy Efficient
