Benefits of Insulating Your Air Ducts

\When taking into consideration the design of a building, now more than ever it’s important to acknowledge the importance of air delivery efficiency. Because today’s codes have increased ventilation requirements, there are many more demands placed on a building’s energy usage, so insulating air ducts has become an important part of the design and build. How exactly does air duct insulation help improve your home’s performance?

Here are a few ways air duct insulation can help, according to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA):

Conserving Energy:  Air handling insulation products help your home’s HVAC system move conditioned air at specified temperatures without causing the energy source to become overtaxed. NAIMA indicates that studies show as much as 30 percent of conditioned air can be lost through unprotected ducts. Not to mention, in unconditioned ducts heat loss can occur by radiating through uninsulated metal.

Reducing Noise:  Ductwork that isn’t properly insulated can be noisy. That can be because of the typical sounds of your HVAC system moving air through the ducts as well as noise transfer, which occurs when ducts pick up the noises from one room and transfer them to another. By insulating your air ducts properly, these noises are greatly reduced.

Reducing Condensation:  According to NAIMA, condensation will form on duct surfaces with a temperature either equal to or lower than the dew point. This moisture can become a hotbed for microbial contamination. Insulating ducts helps reduce condensation on duct surfaces, which in turn helps reduce the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria and helps prevent moisture-related damage.

Aren’t sure whether or not your ducts are properly insulated? The experts at Standard can help. Standard is the oldest and largest insulation company in New York State’s Mohawk Valley, serving the insulation needs of people in the area since 1928. We’d love to share our experience with you.
